Guest stories

Three weeks, in full

Collected months after the stay rather than on the last morning, when everybody is fond of everybody and nobody is a reliable witness.

Deep Healing · September 2025

“By Thursday I had stopped checking my wrist for a watch I was not wearing.”

I had booked it as a holiday and spent the first two days furious about the phone cabinet. Nobody argued with me about it; Ama simply kept putting tea in front of me until I ran out of things to be angry about. I have worked nights for eleven years and I had genuinely forgotten what an unbroken week of sleep does to a person.

Stillness Week · March 2025

“I went to be agreeable. I have been back twice on my own since.”

My wife booked it and I went along to keep the peace, fully expecting incense and being told to feel things. What I got was a man my own age teaching me to sit still for forty minutes without making it a competition. I would like the two return visits on the record as an apology to her.

The Full Return · November 2025

“Nine rooms means you learn everybody's name by the second dinner.”

I have been to two retreats in Bali that cost four times as much and taught me less. The difference is scale. Nine people at one table for seven nights becomes something you cannot manufacture at forty, and the two nights in the forest hut are the only two nights of my adult life I have spent entirely alone.

Six in ten guests book again within a year.

Which is the only figure on this site we would defend in an argument. We have never spent a cedi on advertising and we do not intend to start.
