What we have learned up there
Twenty years of other people's roofs, written down. Most of it is about spending less rather than more.

Featured · Maintenance
Most roofs fail at a detail, not at a sheet
Nine out of ten leaks we are called to are a valley, an abutment, a chimney flashing or a gutter running the wrong way. The covering itself is usually fine and often has fifteen years left in it.
Which matters, because a full re-roof costs roughly thirty times what re-flashing that abutment costs. Anybody who quotes you for the first without having looked properly at the second has not looked properly.

Written by the people who go up the ladder, mostly in answer to a question somebody asked on a doorstep.

Repair
How to tell a leak from a condensation problem
The stain that appears in three rooms at once is almost never a leak. Here is the ten-minute test that tells you which one you have before you ring anybody.

Materials
Clay, concrete or sheet: what actually suits Accra
Heat, harmattan dust and a hard rainy season each punish a different covering. What holds up here is not what holds up in the brochure photographs.

Flat roofs
Why your flat roof ponds, and what it costs to fix
A flat roof is never flat. If yours holds water for more than forty-eight hours after rain, the fall is wrong and no amount of coating will save it.
Seasonal
Everything is easier before April
The rains arrive in April and the second season in September, and both of them fill our diary within a fortnight. A roof looked at in January is a repair; the same roof looked at in May is a repair, a ceiling and a fortnight's wait.
So the free inspection is worth taking in the dry months even if nothing is obviously wrong. It costs nothing and it is the single cheapest thing anybody can do about a roof.
Through the rains we keep two crews on standby for emergencies. Ring at any hour — if we cannot make you watertight the same day we will sheet the roof over and come back at first light.
Do you provide emergency callouts?
Yes, and through the rainy season we keep two crews on standby. Ring the number on this page at any hour; if we cannot make you watertight the same day we will tarpaulin the roof and come back at first light.
Can you redesign my existing roof or reuse what is there?
Often, yes. Battens and purlins in good order get reused, and a sound tile is worth keeping. We will tell you which parts are still doing their job rather than quoting to replace all of it.
How long does a project take to complete?
A leak traced and stopped is usually the same day. A typical four-bedroom re-roof is three to five working days. A commercial flat roof runs to programme and we give you that programme before you sign anything.
