Questions
The things reception is asked every day
If yours is not here, ring 030 268 4100 between 07:00 and 20:00 and somebody will answer it rather than transferring you.
Coming in
Do I need a referral to see a specialist?
No. You can book any of our fourteen departments directly, and most clinics can see you within six days. If you already have a referral letter, bring it — it saves you repeating a history somebody has already taken.
What time is reception open?
07:00 to 20:00, seven days a week, at all three sites. Outside those hours the Adabraka emergency line is answered in A&E itself, by somebody standing in the department.
What should I bring?
Photo ID, your NHIS or scheme card if you have one, any current medicines in their boxes, and previous results or imaging if you have them. Nothing else is needed to be seen.
Is there parking?
Sixty spaces behind the Adabraka building off Farrar Avenue, free for patients and visitors. East Legon and Tema both have on-site parking. The Castle Road frontage is drop-off only.
Emergencies
Is A&E really open all night?
Yes, every hour of the year, with a consultant physically in the department on every shift rather than on call from home. Ring 030 268 4100 or come straight in.
Why was somebody seen before me?
Triage is by clinical urgency, not by arrival time. A nurse assesses everybody within fifteen minutes of arriving, and that assessment — not the queue — decides the order. It is frustrating and it is also what keeps people alive.
What if I cannot pay in an emergency?
You are stabilised first and the money is discussed afterwards. That is the law and it is also how we would want to be treated. Ask for the welfare officer once things are calm.
Fees & cover
What does NHIS actually cover here?
The general outpatient consultation in full, the childhood immunisation schedule, most routine laboratory work and the drugs on the national essential list. Specialist clinics, imaging and inpatient stays are chargeable. The desk will tell you what is not covered before you are seen.
Can I get a price before I agree to anything?
Yes, in writing, for anything planned — and the estimate is what you are billed. Published rates for consultations, tests and beds are on the fees page.
Can I pay in instalments?
Often, yes. Ask for the welfare officer at reception. There is also a hardship fund the hospital tops up each year, and applying for it does not affect your care.
Records & results
How quickly do results come back?
Most routine bloods within four hours, because the laboratory is ours and in the building. Imaging is reported on site the same day. Histology takes five to seven working days.
If I am seen in Tema, can Adabraka see my notes?
Yes. All three sites share one patient record, so a scan taken in Tema is on the consultant's screen in Adabraka the same afternoon. Nobody should have to carry their own X-rays across the city.
Can I have a copy of my own records?
Of course — they are yours. Ask at reception or email hello@haven.com.gh; we will have them ready within five working days, free of charge.
Somebody is on the desk right now
Book a clinic, ask about a bill, or call the emergency line and speak to the department itself. No switchboard, no queue system.
