The Coaches
Six heads of sport, thirty-four coaches and cabin leaders across a season, and one standard every one of them is hired against.

Kwabena Owusu
Camp director
Twenty-two years coaching youth football, eleven of them running this camp. Knows every camper's name by the Tuesday and has never once needed the register to prove it.

Selorm Mensah
Head of football
CAF C licence and a decade in the Ghana league's academy setup. Runs the inter-cabin tournament and referees the final himself, which nobody has yet complained about.

Adjoa Boakye
Head of basketball
Played four seasons in the national women's league before she started coaching. Has a rule that everybody shoots before anybody dribbles, and the Rookies love her for it.

Ama Serwaa
Head of athletics
Sprints and relays, and the person who somehow persuades the ones who say they hate running to enter the 800. Also runs the Sunday morning stretch that nobody is allowed to skip.

Afia Danso
Head of tennis
Came through the camp herself in 2011 and came back to run the courts. Teaches the serve last on purpose — she says a camper who can rally will teach themselves the rest.

Nii Armah Tetteh
Head of swimming & safety
Lifeguard trainer and the reason the pool has never opened without two qualified guards on the side. Runs the water-confidence session every camper takes on day one, whatever they tell us they can do.
How we hire
What it takes to coach here.
A current licence in the sport they lead
CAF badges for football, Ghana Basketball Association certification for basketball, ITF Play Tennis for the courts, and a Ghana Life Saving Society award for anybody who works the pool. Renewals are checked every March, not once at hiring.
Police vetting before their first camp
Every coach, every cabin leader, every kitchen and grounds staff member. No exceptions and no provisional starts while paperwork catches up.
First aid before their first session
A current certificate, refreshed annually, on top of the registered nurse who lives on site for the whole session.
A full week of pre-season, every year
Returning coaches included. Safeguarding, water safety, how we run the quiet hour, and what to do at two in the morning when a nine-year-old wants to go home.
We hire for next summer in February.
Coaches, cabin leaders, lifeguards and kitchen staff. Former campers are very welcome to apply — a third of the 2024 team started here with a rucksack and a name tag.
