Common questions

Common questions

Everything reception gets asked most, plus the things people assume the answer is no to. It is usually yes.

Coming in

What are your regular office hours?

Outpatients run from 07:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays. The emergency room, the ward and the pharmacy are open around the clock, every day of the year including public holidays.

Do I need a referral to see a specialist?

No. You can book any of our consultant clinics directly. If you have been referred by another hospital, bring the letter and any films or results with you — it saves repeating tests you have already had.

How long will I wait?

Booked outpatient appointments run within about twenty minutes of their time on most days. Walk-ins wait behind whoever booked. The emergency room is triaged rather than queued, so somebody who arrives after you may well be seen first — that is the system working, not the system failing.

Is there parking?

Twenty-two spaces in the compound and more on the service road beside the building. It is tightest between eight and ten in the morning, which is also when the outpatient clinic is busiest, so the early slot is worth asking for on both counts.

Paying

Which insurance schemes do you accept?

NHIS, Nationwide Medical Insurance, Acacia Health, GLICO Healthcare, Apex Health and Premier Health, plus most corporate schemes. Bring your card and a photo ID and reception will do the rest.

Will I be told the cost first?

Yes, in writing, for anything beyond a consultation. If the treatment changes once it is under way we stop and talk to you before going on. The full fee list is published on the fees page, in cedis, with real figures rather than 'from'.

Can I pay in instalments?

Anything over five thousand cedis can be split across three months at no interest. Ask at reception when you are booking rather than at the point of paying — it is a form, and it takes ten minutes.

Treatment and records

What should I bring to a first appointment?

A photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, and whatever medicines you are currently taking — the boxes rather than a list, because the dose matters and the box has it printed on the side.

How do I get a refill on my prescription?

Call the pharmacy on the main number or send the prescription number by email before noon and it will be ready the same afternoon. Repeat prescriptions for long-term medicines are reviewed every six months.

Can I have a copy of my records?

They are yours. Ask at records with a photo ID and you will have them within two working days, in print or as a PDF. There is no charge for your own notes, and we do not ask why you want them.

What if I want a second opinion?

Say so and we will help you get one, including sending your notes and films wherever you ask. A clinician who is offended by the question is a clinician you should be getting a second opinion about.

Out of hours

Do you see emergencies at night?

The emergency room is open every hour of every day including public holidays, with a doctor and two nurses on the floor and a consultant on call. You do not need to ring first — come, or ring the emergency line on the way if you want us ready.

Do you have an ambulance?

One, based here, crewed by a paramedic and an emergency medical technician. It covers Airport Residential, East Legon, Cantonments, Roman Ridge and Dzorwulu, and it will take you on to a tertiary hospital if that is where you need to be.

Is the pharmacy open overnight?

Yes, on the ground floor, all night, every night. It dispenses for the emergency room and the ward and it will fill an outside prescription too if you have one and we have the medicine.

Still stuck

Ask us the one that is not here

Reception answers the telephone from seven in the morning, and anything sent by email gets a reply within one working day. If it turns out other people are asking the same thing, it ends up on this page.
