Work with us

Fourteen people, and room for three more

Four jobs are open, three of them new. The fourth is Kojo Danso's place at the Labone counter, which he leaves in September to go back to school.

A pine shelf on a whitewashed brick wall holding a row of clear spray bottles with black pump tops, a line of round silver tins in front of them and two candles in glass jars at the end

Most of this job is done standing at a counter

Whatever the title says, the work happens at the counter. You will put a cream on the back of somebody's hand, ask what their skin is doing by four in the afternoon, and say plainly when the honest answer is two products rather than five. Fourteen of us do that across Osu, Labone and Kumasi, and nobody here has an office to sit in while somebody else serves.

Nobody is paid commission and nobody carries a target. You are expected to talk a customer out of a jar that is wrong for them, and to send somebody to a dermatologist when what they are describing is not a skincare problem at all. A customer who spent GH₵ 240 on our advice and regrets it costs this shop more than the sale was ever worth. Everybody works one Saturday in two, because Saturday is the busiest day of the week and the people making the decisions should be standing there for it.

Terms

What the job comes with

None of it is unusual, and that is rather the point. It is the four things we would want to know before writing to a shop we had never worked in.

Pay looked at twice a year

In January and in July, in writing, whether or not you ask for it. Salary is in the account on the 25th, or on the Friday before when the 25th falls on a Sunday.

GH₵ 300 of the shelf a month

Anything we make at what it cost us to make, from your first week, and GH₵ 300 of it a month for nothing. It covers the jar your mother is using as well as your own.

A morning a month in the workroom

One morning every month in the room behind the Osu counter with Yaa Owusu, weighing and whipping a real batch. Everybody who sells this range has made some of it.

The workroom shuts on Sunday

Nothing is whipped, filled or packed on a Sunday, the counters open short, and nobody is on the rota two Sundays running. It goes up a fortnight ahead so you can plan around it.

Open now

Four jobs open at the moment

Every one of these is a real vacancy with a start date against it. Write to the address on the row, say which job in the subject line, and somebody standing in the Osu shop will read it that week.

Saturdays

A pale wooden workbench under a tall window laid with bottles of golden oil, small glass jars, a tub of white wax flakes and a wooden tray of cinnamon and dried botanicals

One conversation, one Saturday, an answer

There is no form to fill in and no test to sit. Write to the shop, and if there is something to talk about we will ask you in. It takes about three weeks from the first email to a start date.

One conversation, forty minutes

In the room behind the till in Osu, with whoever you would be standing beside. You will be asked what you use on your own face and why, and there is no wrong answer to that except a rehearsed one.

One Saturday, at the day rate

Half a day at the counter serving real customers, paid, with somebody next to you. A Saturday rather than a Tuesday, because Saturday is the honest version of the job.

An answer inside a week

We write back and say yes or no, and when it is no we say why. Nobody who has written to this shop has been left to work the answer out from the silence.

No form, no test

Send us two paragraphs

Which job you are answering, and one thing you have talked somebody out of buying. That is the whole application.
