Routine

Six steps, and you can skip three of them

What goes on first, what goes on after it, and an honest note at the bottom about the three a first routine does not need. Everything named here is on the shelf at 12 Lokko Road in Osu.

Morning and evening

The order it goes on in

Thin before thick, water before oil, sunscreen last. Remember that one sentence and the rest of this page sorts itself out.

Morning

Five steps and about four minutes, and the last of the five is the one that decides what the other four were worth.

01

Gentle milk cleanser

GH₵ 120 · 150 ml

Half a pump, water as warm as the tap runs. On a morning you did not sweat, water on its own is also an answer.

02

Hibiscus toning mist

GH₵ 95 · 100 ml

Two presses while the face is still damp, then leave it a minute to sink in before anything else goes on.

03

Vitamin C serum

GH₵ 240 · 30 ml

Four drops, pressed in rather than rubbed in. Give it a fortnight before you decide whether it is working.

04

Shea renewal cream

GH₵ 180 · 50 ml

A pea, no more. Anything heavier will not sit under sunscreen and you will feel it by ten in the morning.

05

Everyday SPF 50

GH₵ 160 · 60 ml

Two fingers' length for a face and a neck, every morning, and again at two if you are outside for the afternoon.

All five, together

GH₵ 795

Evening

Five steps, one of which is a Sunday rather than a habit. Nothing here needs to be done in a hurry.

01

Gentle milk cleanser

GH₵ 120 · 150 ml

Twice. Once to take the sunscreen off, once to wash the face that was underneath it.

02

Clay and charcoal mask

GH₵ 130 · 75 ml

Sundays only. Ten minutes, then off. It is not a thing to fall asleep in, and it is not a thing to do twice a week.

03

Rice water essence

GH₵ 175 · 120 ml

A palmful, patted in with both hands. The step people skip, and the one they notice when they stop.

04

Niacinamide night oil

GH₵ 210 · 30 ml

Three drops, for marks that outstay the spot that made them. Not on the same night as the neem gel.

05

Baobab body butter

GH₵ 145 · 200 ml

Elbows, knees and shins while the skin is still damp. Harmattan takes those three first, every year.

All five, together

GH₵ 780

The cleanser is on both lists and you only buy it once, so the two columns together come to GH₵ 1,455 rather than GH₵ 1,575. Nobody starts there, and the band under this one says which part of it to start with instead.

Three of the six you can skip

Cleanse, moisturise and protect are the routine. GH₵ 460, three bottles, twice a day, and for most faces in Accra they will do more than the other three steps put together. We would rather tell you that on this page than have you work it out four months and a shelf of bottles later.

Serums are the step people start with and the first one to leave. They work on skin that is already clean, already moisturised and already covered, and until it is, a GH₵ 240 bottle is doing a GH₵ 120 bottle's job badly. Start one when the first three are a habit, use one at a time, and give it a fortnight.

A mask is a Sunday, not a step. Ten minutes once a week, and nothing it does is something the first three were not already doing more slowly. Body is the same kind of thing: a tub of baobab butter is not a face routine, and the month to buy one is the month the harmattan arrives, which is not this one.
