Two generations, one appointment slot
Akosua had not seen a dentist in eleven years and did not want her daughter to inherit that. They come together now, back to back on a Saturday morning. Maame has had one filling in six years and is not afraid of the chair, which was the whole point.

The visit where nothing happens on purpose
Nii's first three appointments involved no treatment at all — a ride in the chair, a look at the mirror, a sticker. By the fourth he asked to have his teeth counted. He has since sat through two fillings without holding anybody's hand.

Years of grinding had worn Gifty's upper teeth to two thirds of their height. The plan ran to eleven appointments across five months and the quote she was given in February was the amount she paid in July. She sent us the photograph herself.
