Our story

Thirty years on one street

The grill went in before the tables did. Everything since has been an argument about whether to change anything.

1996

Four tables and a borrowed fridge

Lydia Owusu had cooked for other people's rooms for eleven years when she took the lease on a shopfront with a bad roof and a good yard. The grill went in first, before the tables did, because that was the part she was sure about.

The original grill is the one against the back wall. It has been re-lined four times and nobody is allowed to suggest replacing it.

Thirty years

What happened, and when

Nine dates that changed how the room works. Everything else was a Tuesday.

The lease, and the grill

Four tables inside, two in the yard, and a menu of six things chalked on the wall.

1996

The first Tuesday market run

Started because a supplier let us down. Never stopped, and it is still Lydia who goes.

1997

The yard gets a roof

Half of it, at least — which doubled the room and made December bookable.

2003

Kwesi Boadu walks in

Asked for a weekend shift washing up. Runs the pass now, and wrote most of what is on it.

2014

The wood oven

Built in the yard by a bricklayer from Ho over five weeks. Pizza went on the board that October.

2016

The back room opens

Sixteen around one table, with its own door — the first thing here that had to be booked.

2018

Cooking off site

A regular asked us to bring the grill to a wedding in Aburi. We have been doing it ever since.

2021

The seafood weeks

Six weeks each July of whatever comes up from Tema. Now the busiest month of the year.

2023

Thirty years on the same street

Same grill, same market run, three of the first regulars still on the same table.

2026

People do not come back for the food. They come back because somebody remembered them.
