Two colleagues in headsets going through a clipboard together

Most of this job happens standing up

Whatever the title says, the work is on the floor. You will hand people things to hold, put the SIM in, move the photographs across, and stand there until the email is working. Eleven of us do this across three showrooms, and nobody here has a desk to sit behind while somebody else serves.

Nobody is paid on commission, and you are expected to talk somebody out of a purchase when it is wrong for them: the cheaper laptop, the repair instead of the replacement, or nothing at all today. A customer who resents the machine by March costs the shop more than the margin was ever worth. Everybody does one Saturday in three, whatever they do the rest of the week, because Saturday is the busiest of the six and the decisions should be made by people who were there for it.

What the job comes with

None of it is unusual, and that is rather the point. It is the four things we would want to know before writing to a shop we had never worked in.

Paid on the 25th

Your salary is in the account on the 25th, or on the Friday before when the 25th is a Sunday. In nine years it has never once been late.

The staff price

Anything in the shop at what we paid for it, from your first week. It covers the phone your mother is using as well as your own.

A phone and a line

A phone off the shelf and a line with data on it, in your name, from the day you start. After two years the phone is yours.

A quarter to learn something

Two paid days and GH₵ 1,500 every quarter for something we cannot teach you here. Last quarter two people spent theirs on a soldering course in Accra.

Four jobs open at the moment

Every one of these is a real vacancy with a start date against it. Write to the address on the row, say which job, and somebody in the Osu shop will read it.

One conversation, half a day, an answer

There is no form and no online test. Write to the shop, and if there is something to talk about we will ask you in to the counter for one conversation, about forty minutes, with whoever you would be working beside. You will be asked what you have fixed, sold or set up for somebody who could not do it themselves.

If that goes well we ask you back for half a day on the floor, paid at the day rate, serving real customers with somebody next to you. Then we tell you inside a week, either way, and if it is no we say why. Nobody who has written to this shop has been left to work the answer out from the silence.
