The scoop of happiness
We are not really in the ice cream business. We are in the business of the ten minutes after somebody hands you one. Everything here is churned in small batches, in Accra, out of things that grew here — and if a flavour stops being fun to make we stop making it.

Flavours, always

Milk, cane sugar, fruit that was in a market this week, and whatever the flavour is named after. That is the whole list. No stabiliser, no powder, nothing coloured that did not grow. It is also why a sealed tub keeps for three weeks rather than a year.

Scoop of praise

“I hid a tub of the sobolo behind the frozen tilapia and my sister found it in four days. I need a better hiding place.”
Afia Owusu
Labone

“The van reached my office at four on a Friday. Nobody in that building did any more work, and I am the one who ordered it.”
Kwabena Asare
Dansoman

“Kelewele in ice cream sounded like a dare. Now it is the only one I order, and I have stopped apologising for it.”
Naa Adjeley Quartey
Teshie

“I have been eating ice cream in Accra since 1984. This is the first one that tastes like somebody in Accra made it.”
Yaw Boateng
Ridge

“They opened in Adum and my Saturdays have been ruined in the nicest possible way. Two scoops, walk to the market, repeat.”

Things we wrote down
Short pieces about milk, mangoes and getting a frozen thing across Accra in one piece.

A sorbet beats cream in this heat
Fat gives up before water does, which is why the sobolo gets to Adenta in one piece and the tigernut travels in a cool box.

How to feed thirty children ice cream
A birthday, a scoop cart and thirty small people with strong opinions. What we have learned about how much is enough.

Nine months looking for one mango
We tasted everything between Somanya and Techiman before a single crate of it was allowed anywhere near a tub.
