A small studio, on purpose
We are two planners, a stylist and a production manager on Ring Road East. We take twelve weddings a year because that is how many we can do properly.
How it started
Vellum began with one wedding for a friend who had run out of both money and patience — a marquee borrowed from a church, a running order written on the back of an envelope, and the discovery that the thing everybody actually wants is not a bigger budget but somebody else holding the telephone.
The planner
Abena Owusu
Fourteen years and something over two hundred weddings. She is the one who holds the budget, tells you honestly what a number will and will not buy, and telephones the caterer when the caterer has gone quiet.
The stylist
Selorm Agbeko
Trained as a florist and never stopped being one. Everything you can see on the day — the tables, the flowers, the paper, where the light falls after six o'clock — is hers, and every bit of it was drawn and costed before it was bought.
How it works
Three steps, and the third is the point
Everything before the wedding is preparation for one thing: that on the day, nobody you love is working.
First — The meeting
An hour, and an honest number
You tell us the date, the shape of the day and what you have to spend. We tell you what that buys in Accra this year, and what it does not. Nobody is charged for the meeting and nobody is charged for being told the budget will not stretch.
Second — The drawing
A scheme with prices against it
Within three weeks you get the whole day on paper: the running order, the suppliers we recommend and why, the look of each space, and a line-by-line budget that adds up to the number you gave us.
Third — The running
We take the telephone
From then on the suppliers call us. You get a written update every fortnight and a schedule eight weeks out, and on the day itself there are two of us on site from the first delivery to the last van.
