The making

Eleven hours, one pair of hands

Kofi Mensah-Bonsu runs the room above the shop. He came to us from a saddlery in Kumasi, twenty-two years into the trade, and the hides still come from there: full grain, vegetable tanned, and bought whole so a bag can be cut around the marks in a skin rather than through them.

Nothing in this room is lined. A lining is where a bag hides its stitching, and the stitching here is meant to be looked at.

The hide

Full grain, vegetable tanned at a tannery in Kumasi.

The cut

One person takes a piece from the cutting table to the box.

The Labadi Tote

Eleven hours, from the cutting table to the box.

The other four rooms

Outerwear, knitwear, tailoring and the small things, all made in the same building.
